My Volunteer Experience in Nepal
My experience volunteering in Nepal with a local orphanage in Kathmandu has been an excellent one. It gave me an excellent opportunity to help and love the children of Nepal. I never felt that I was working, simply because the kids just need someone to show them how special they are. The children aged from 1-9 years are the happiest, carefree and unspoilt children I have ever had the enjoyment to work and play with! My time was spent with playing games, drawing, singing songs, helping with homework, teaching English and simply going for a walk outside near the orphanage were really a big event that they enjoyed a lot! Communication with the children is a hugh problem as most of them are young and do not know how to speak English. And in all, make it very challenging!
I was also able to observe the Nepali cultures and traditions. The food and accommodation were simple, allowing me to experience like as Nepalis live it. The housesisters were fantastic to work with. They made me feel a part of their family as well. They taught me various aspect of the Nepali culture, and opened my eyes to the issues that urban and rural Nepalis face each and everyday.
Secondly, I also had an opportunity to volunteer at another local orphanage home. Such visit gave me ideas how other orphanage homes are run. Due to very poor condition and lack of finanical support. Most of the children only get to eat meat once or twice a month. They are not getting enough vegetables either. As a matter of fact, the children are not getting enough food to eat. As such, from time to time I would buy milk, some bread and biscuits for the children. The appreciation and smile of these poor people were genuine that comes from their heart. It was priceless!!
My volunteer work has been an incredibly rewarding experience. Not only is Nepal one of the most beautiful countries I have ever visited. The Nepalese people are the most friendliest, kind, big hearted and genuine people I have ever met. The happy attitude to live, in spite of their poor background, they are so positive, loving and as a volunteer you will be inspired by them.
I can recommend doing volunteer work in Nepal to anyone whole heartedly, have a can-do attitude and with an open mind. The most amazing and life changing experiences.
Although, I am back in Australia now. I never stopped thinking of the children and people in Nepal. I am selling Nepali goods and conducting other fund raising activities in Australia, hoping to give my continue support and help to those needed children in Nepal. All money earned proceed to HECF Funding.
